Brighten up your week with a specialty bouquet of double tulips, Commonly known as Peony Tulips, fancy double tulips are the showstoppers in a bouquet. Unlike the classic goblet-shaped tulip, these varieties are bred with extra rows of petals, giving them a lush, voluminous look that mimics a peony or a rose.
Tulips have a fantastic vase life and will last a full week if not two. Here are some tips for flower care after you receive your tulips.
Vase life tricks
Double tulips are heavy-headed, so they need a little extra care to stay upright and beautiful:
-
The "Straighten Up" Trick: Tulips continue to grow in the vase and will bend toward the light. If they look a bit "floppy" when you get them, wrap the top two-thirds of the bouquet tightly in newspaper and place them in cool water for a few hours. This "resets" the stems to stand straight.
-
The Cold Water Secret: Tulips love the cold. For Mother's Day, use chilled water and even drop an ice cube in the vase every morning. It slows down the blooming process so they stay in that beautiful "half-open" stage longer.
-
Trim the Leaves: Double tulips often have a lot of foliage. Remove any leaves that will sit below the waterline; this prevents bacteria buildup and ensures all the energy goes to those massive flower heads.
-
A Deep Vase is Best: Because the heads of double tulips are significantly heavier than standard tulips, choose a tall, supportive vase. This prevents the stems from snapping or bending under their own weight.
